The full form of CAT is the Common Admission Test. CAT is a computer-based test for graduate management degree admission. Three sections make up the test.
- VARC (Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension)
- DILR (Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning) and
- QA(Quantitative Ability).

The three-hour online exam is divided into one hour for each section. The IIMs (Indian Management Institutes) started this test and are using it to choose applicants for their PGDM and MBA business administration programmes. One of the IIMs administers the test yearly based on a rotational schedule.
Eligibility Criteria
- Should have at least a bachelor’s degree GPA of 50%, a 45% minimum for SC (Scheduled Caste), ST (Scheduled Tribe), PWD (Persons with Disabilities), or DA (Differently Able) categories, and a minimum of 50% overall.
- Any institution in India created by an act of the national or state legislature, or another institution of higher learning founded by an act of Parliament, may grant the degree. Additionally, the HRD Ministry, Government of India, has approved the institution to be regarded as a university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or to possess an equivalent degree.
- Candidates who are beginning their final year of a bachelor’s degree programme or an equivalent qualification exam, as well as those who have completed the requirements for the degree and are awaiting results, may also apply.
Length and Format of the test
- The CAT exam’s exact format changes every year.
- There was a practice test available for the 2018 CAT.
- Three sections make up the computer-based CAT exam: QA, Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning, and Verbal and Reading Comprehension.
- The QA and VARC divisions each had 34 questions, while the DI & LR section included 32 issues.
- The distribution of questions has stayed the same since about CAT 2015. Questions had previously been asked in a different way.
