What is the full form of GFR?

The full form of GFR is the Glomerular Filtration Rate. It is a test to determine how well the kidneys function. It explicitly determines how much blood travels through the glomeruli each minute. Glomeruli are tiny filters found in the kidneys that filter out waste from the blood.

An individual’s age, sex, and race are associated with the serum levels of creatinine in a mathematical formula used to determine the Glomerulus filtration rate. The risk to the kidney increases with decreasing GFR levels. It enables the doctor to prepare a treatment as necessary by informing them of the kidney damage stage.

Method to Perform the Test

The stepwise explanation for the performance of the test is given below.

  1. A blood sample is needed.
  2. The laboratory receives the blood sample. The laboratory analyses the blood sample to determine the creatinine level.
  3. A chemical waste product produced from creatine is creatinine. The body creates a molecule called creatine, which is particularly important for muscles that produce energy.
  4. The laboratory expert combines the blood creatinine level with a number of other factors to calculate the GFR.
  5. Different formulae have been utilised for both children and adults. The following are mostly incorporated in the methodology and are listed below.
  • Blood creatinine measurement
  • Gender
  • Weight
  • Height
  • Age
  • Ethnicity
