What is the full form of PWD?

The full form of PWD is Public Works Department. PWD is a department of the Indian government that is in charge of constructing and maintaining public utilities, including drinking water supplies, roads, bridges, and public works projects. The Department of Public Works manages all public service activities centrally in India.

Each state has a unique PWD, with Divisions, Sub-Divisions, and Units dispersed regionally. There appears to be a different PWD for states like Rajasthan, Punjab, Mizoram, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and many others. In every country, the departments are subject to the same duties.

Responsibilities of PWD

  • The town’s clean drinking water supply and the pipeline’s repair fall under the purview of the PWD.
  • Additionally, PWD will complete necessary rehabilitation work if government-owned hospitals, schools, or highways sustain damage.
  • Its duties are essentially the same in every state, including designing and constructing all government-led public projects, creating and developing highways, providing security and road & highway services, maintaining and modernising public structures, and so forth.
  • The military once conducted some of this research in India. In the middle of the nineteenth century, a specific division of the Indian Civil Service was eventually given charge of public works.

PWD’s work can be classified into four categories:

  • Construction and maintenance of the government building system
  • Construction and Maintenance of Bridges
  • Highways, population expansion, flyovers, and road safety.
