History of IBM

  • On June 16, 1911, Charles Ranlett Flint established The Company CTR (Computing Tabulating Recording Company). It was the outcome of the merger of three companies: the Computing Scale Company, the International Time Recording Company, and the Tabulating Machine Company.
  • Thomas J. Watson, Sr., a founder of the National Cash Register Company, established the Computing Tabulating Recording Company around 1914.
  • IBM replaced CTR as the company’s name in 1924.
  • In 1953, IBM unveiled the first computer, the 701 defence calculator. It was a general-purpose electrical instrument.
  • In 1957, IBM created a programming language, FORTRAN.
  • In 1933 IBM and 1935 acquired the exclusive rights for the electric typewriter; it produced an upgraded version.
  • The company launched its first hard drive in 1956 (305 RAMAC).
  • In 1967, floppy disks were introduced, and the process through which the information was stored and transferred modified the method.
  • In 1970, in cooperation with American Express and American Airlines, IBM developed the first airline ticket vending kiosk.
  • In 1972 IBM made its first ATM (IBM 2984).
  • In 1981, IBM introduced the first Personal Computer(IBM PC).
