The full form of NET is National Eligibility Test. NET is mostly used as a nationwide entry exam for postgraduates who desire to pursue a PhD or a career as a teacher in India. It is remembered as UGC NET or NTA-UGC-NET. It is a test given to candidates for Junior Research Fellowships (JRFs) and Assistant Professor positions in Indian institutions and colleges.

Few points about NET
- The UGC administers the NET (University Grants Commission). UGC conducts this exam throughout India.
- The test was run for the first time in 1989, and since then, it has been run twice a year.
- Science studies are conducted through UGC CSIR NET. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research is responsible for this.
- Until July 2018, the CBSE administered the UGC NET exam. However, starting in December 2018, the NTA (National Testing Agency) will administer the UGC National Eligibility Test.
- This test’s primary goal is to categorise candidates for junior research fellowships and university-level lectureships.
