Which Switzerland study visa do I need, Type C or Type D?
The Type C visa is a Schengen visa for study stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, such as short courses. The Type D is a national visa for stays longer than 90 days, used for bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes.
The difference comes down to how long you will study in Switzerland. If your course lasts 90 days or less, you generally apply for the Schengen Type C visa, and for anything longer you need the national Type D visa. Degree students almost always fall in the Type D group.

Other points to know
- Type C applications can generally be filed up to 6 months before your journey.
- Type C applicants give fingerprints and a facial image, which are stored in the Visa Information System for 5 years.
- Fingerprints given within the previous 59 months may be reused if they meet the requirements.
- For Type D, the competent cantonal migration authority in Switzerland takes the decision.
My Advice
Match the visa to your course length first, then plan the timeline around it. Since the Type D can take up to 12 weeks, start your application as early as your admission letter allows and check the Swiss Embassy checklist for Indian students before you book any appointment.
