• Chemistry credit load: IIT Jodhpur, for example, requires three years or six semesters of Chemistry plus Mathematics at the 10+2 level for its M.Sc., and other IITs set different thresholds under the same JAM route.
• Dissertation component: if you want a research-heavy path toward a PhD, prioritize programs with a substantial dissertation and access to modern instrumentation over ones built mainly around coursework.
• CSIR-UGC NET route: keep this in mind if academia is the long-term goal. M.Sc. Chemistry graduates who meet CSIR's marks criteria can sit the NET exam for JRF or lectureship eligibility, with Chemical Sciences as one of the test subjects.

My Advice

Don't pick a specialization purely from the title. A program combining Analytical, Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry modules can prepare you for pharma roles just as well as one narrowly labelled Pharmaceutical Chemistry, so read the actual syllabus and lab component before ranking your shortlist.
