Your software background is an asset here, not a gap to apologise for. Skills like OOP, data structures, testing and Git workflows transfer directly into embedded work; the deliberate gap to fill is the hardware and systems side, moving from Software Engineering through Embedded Software into full Embedded Systems and IoT.

What the Curriculum Should Actually Cover

  • Embedded C or C++: the industry-standard foundation for firmware work.
  • RTOS and Real-Time Systems: important for automotive, robotics and industrial IoT roles.
  • Computer Architecture: understanding CPUs, memory and peripherals at a level pure software courses rarely cover.
  • IoT and Sensor Networks: direct preparation for IoT development roles, including protocols like MQTT and BLE.
  • Embedded Linux and security: increasingly relevant for connected devices with more sophisticated operating requirements.

Your Software Background Still Counts

UC Irvine's Embedded and Cyber-Physical Systems programme, for example, explicitly combines embedded software, real-time systems, sensors and IoT security, and describes graduate career areas including IoT stack design and firmware engineering alongside conventional software roles. ASU's Computer Engineering programme similarly frames itself as combining hardware and software rather than replacing one with the other.

My Advice

Before you apply, get comfortable with C or C++, microcontrollers, interrupts, GPIO and UART or SPI or I2C on real hardware such as an Arduino, Raspberry Pi or STM32 board. Programmes generally expect a CS, CE or EE background, but most will also consider applicants from other disciplines who can demonstrate this kind of hands-on preparation.
