Which master's specialisation suits a graduate in Fashion Design and Fashion Entrepreneurship applying to New Zealand?
You already have the creative and entrepreneurial foundation; repeating it in another Fashion Design master's adds little. The higher-value move is layering business, sustainability or innovation skills onto that base so you can lead a brand rather than only design for one.
Why Sustainable Business Beats Another Fashion Design Degree at This Stage
- Differentiation: the University of Otago's Master of Sustainable Business focuses on responsible business strategy balancing environmental, social and economic outcomes, which pairs naturally with a fashion entrepreneurship background.
- Open to non-business graduates: Massey University's Master of Management (Sustainability) explicitly says the program can suit students whose undergraduate degree isn't in business.
- Career direction: Sustainable Fashion Manager, Circular Fashion Consultant, Ethical Sourcing Specialist or your own sustainable fashion brand.
Sustainable Business vs Innovation & Entrepreneurship: Which Fits Your Fashion Background
| Goal | Best program | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Build a sustainable or ethical fashion brand | Master of Sustainable Business (Otago) or Management with Sustainability (Massey) | Adds circular economy, ESG and sustainable strategy skills |
| Launch and grow your own fashion label | AUT's Master of Business Management with Innovation Management and Strategy options | Combines innovation, strategy and creative ideation directly aimed at entrepreneurs |
If You Want to Stay Purely Creative: Master of Design
- The University of Auckland's Master of Design emphasises strategic, viable and sustainable design plus entrepreneurship.
- 2026 international tuition is listed around NZ$55,484, so budget this against the business-track options above.
- Choose this only if your priority is remaining a hands-on designer rather than moving toward brand leadership.

My Advice
A common mistake I see is choosing the most familiar-sounding degree (another design master's) instead of the one that fills the actual gap in a founder's profile, which is usually business and sustainability literacy, not more design training. If you're set on entrepreneurship specifically, AUT's innovation-focused track is worth comparing directly against the sustainability route before you decide.
