A physiotherapy degree opens more New Zealand master's doors than it might seem, because it is explicitly accepted into public health, health science and clinical practice routes, not only into physiotherapy-specific programs. The right choice comes down to whether you want to keep practising clinically or move into a broader healthcare career.

Where a BPT Background Is Accepted

Master's ProgramIELTS RequirementCareer Direction
Master of Public Health (Auckland, AUT)6.5 overall, no band below 6.0Public health, policy, NGOs, epidemiology
Master of Health Sciences (Auckland, AUT)6.5 overall, no band below 6.0Healthcare research, health services, academia
Master of Physiotherapy Practice (Auckland)6.5 overall, no band below 6.0Clinical physiotherapy in NZ
Master of Physiotherapy Practice (AUT)7.0 overall, every band at least 6.5Clinical physiotherapy, AUT registration route

The Clinical Practice Catch to Know Before Applying

  • Registration is separate from the degree: completing a master's does not automatically make you eligible to practise as a registered physiotherapist in New Zealand; that runs through a separate competence check.
  • University-specific IELTS bands vary sharply: AUT's clinical physiotherapy route needs 7.0 overall with every band at least 6.5, well above what you currently hold.
  • Auckland's clinical route stays reachable: its Master of Physiotherapy Practice lists 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, matching your current score.

My Advice

In my experience, physiotherapy graduates default to the physiotherapy-titled master's without checking whether registration and clinical practice are actually the goal. If you are not certain you want to keep practising hands-on, Public Health or Health Sciences at Auckland keeps your options genuinely open, since both accept your current IELTS band without a retake, and neither locks you into the more competitive clinical registration pathway.
