When writing my SOP, which paragraph-wise structure should I follow?
A statement of purpose usually runs from an introduction to academic background, work experience, why this course, career goals, why this university and a conclusion. Each paragraph has one intent, and the full SOP often runs to 7 to 8 paragraphs unless the university says otherwise.
A statement of purpose is written in paragraphs like an essay, and each paragraph serves one intent. The structure below acts as both a format and a template that you can tweak. Always follow the university's own instructions if they give any.
Suggested Paragraph Structure
| Paragraph | Section | What to include |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Introduction | Introduce yourself and your course interest, with a catchy start |
| 2nd (can stretch to 3rd) | Academic background | Accomplishments so far, brief future goals, extracurriculars and any research |
| 3rd | Work experience | Professional experience or internships, your role and the company |
| 4th | Why this course? | Your motivation and the knowledge and experience you will gain |
| 5th | Career goals | Immediate aim, top employers and mid-term goals after the course |
| 6th | Why this university? | Alignment with its vision and mission, curriculum, faculty and reasons to study there |
| 7th | Conclusion | Sum up key points and show you are a good fit for the course and university |
Using the Structure Well
- Treat the structure as a guideline and adjust it to your own profile.
- A typical SOP often has 7 to 8 paragraphs unless the university mentions otherwise.
- Give each paragraph a single intent so the reader never loses track.
- Check the official university page for word limits and prompts before you finalise.
My Advice
Draft one paragraph at a time with its single purpose in mind. Do not force every section if you have no work experience, and spend that space on projects or research instead. Customise the last two sections for each university.
