IELTS Writing is scored on a band of 0 to 9 using four equally weighted criteria: Task Achievement for Task 1 or Task Response for Task 2, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Check the official IELTS page for current criteria.

Examiners award your IELTS Writing a band score from 0 to 9 using four assessment criteria. They give equal weightage to each criterion.

The Four Writing Criteria

CriterionWhat it covers
Task Achievement (Task 1)Selecting key ideas, precise data analysis and a logical, organised presentation
Task Response (Task 2)Covering all parts of the topic, a well organised response and accurate meaning
Coherence and CohesionDividing ideas into paragraphs with a main idea each, properly connected
Lexical ResourceVocabulary range, including phrasal verbs, idioms and collocations used in the right context
Grammatical Range and AccuracyA wide range of structures, correct tenses, punctuation and word choice

How to Use This in Practice

  • In Task 1, stick to important details and leave out the rest.
  • In Task 2, answer the question in a concise, thorough and well organised way.
  • Plan paragraphs so each one has a clear main idea.
  • Use varied vocabulary only where it fits the context.

My Advice

Score your own practice essays against all four criteria, not just grammar. Since each criterion carries equal weightage, a weak one can hold back your band. Confirm the latest criteria on the official IELTS page.
