Academic Records: What Universities Actually Verify

Your bachelor's degree certificate (or a provisional certificate if you have not graduated yet) and semester-wise transcripts form the core academic file. If your university issues a consolidated transcript, include it alongside the individual mark sheets, since some admissions teams read the consolidated version first. Class 10 and 12 certificates are sometimes requested but carry far less weight at master's level than your undergraduate record. If any document is not in English, you generally need a certified translation attached to the original, not a substitute for it.

English Proficiency: IELTS Is Not the Only Option

IELTS Academic is the most common requirement, but TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and, at some universities, Duolingo English Test are also accepted. Do not assume a bachelor's degree taught in English automatically earns a waiver; each university sets its own policy, and many also set a minimum score per section, not just an overall band.

Statement of Purpose, CV and Recommendation Letters

• SOP or personal statement: explains your academic background, why this course and university, and your career goals.
• Letters of recommendation: usually two to three, from professors or, where the programme allows professional references, a supervisor.
• CV or academic resume: one to two pages covering education, projects, internships and technical skills.

Financial and Immigration Documents Come Later, Not First

Bank statements, an education-loan sanction letter or a scholarship award letter are usually needed after admission, for your visa application rather than the initial application itself. Your passport should have at least six months' validity beyond your intended stay. Programme-specific extras, such as a portfolio for design and architecture courses or a research proposal for research-heavy programmes, apply only to specific fields, so check your target course page before assuming you need one.

My Advice

Build your document folder the day you shortlist universities, not the week before a deadline.
