What should I include in my motivation letter for an internship abroad as a fresher with no experience?
As a fresher, you can write a strong internship motivation letter by focusing on relevant projects, transferable skills, courses, extracurricular activities and your willingness to learn. Support each skill with a specific example from college projects, societies or competitions, and choose only activities that relate to the internship.
Applying for your first internship can make you feel that you lack experience. You can still write a convincing letter by focusing on your academic preparation, skills, projects and willingness to learn.
What to Put in the Letter
| Element | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Projects | Mention projects directly related to the internship and briefly explain your role, the skills you used and the outcome |
| Transferable skills | Communication, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, time management, research, presentation and critical thinking, backed by examples from college projects, societies or competitions |
| Courses and certificates | Show interest in building skills beyond your syllabus, such as financial modelling, Excel, accounting or investment analysis for a finance internship |
| Activities | Community work, college societies and event management can show responsibility and teamwork |
Tone and Selection
- Choose activities that show skills relevant to the internship instead of listing everything you have done.
- You are not expected to know everything, so show that you are willing to learn, take feedback and apply your knowledge.
- Instead of saying you are a quick learner, explain what you recently learned and how you applied it.
My Advice
Write one paragraph per strength, each with a concrete example, and cut anything that does not connect to the role. Keep the tone warm and confident, and adapt the letter to each internship.
