What separates an IELTS mock test from a practice test when I plan my preparation?
An IELTS mock test is a full-length, timed simulation of all four modules in one sitting, the closest to the real exam. A practice test usually focuses on one module at a time and may not be strictly timed. Use practice tests early and full mocks in the final weeks.

Mock Test vs Practice Test
| Feature | Mock test | Practice test |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | All 4 modules in one sitting | Usually one module at a time |
| Timing | Full-length and timed | May not be strictly timed |
| Closeness to real exam | Closest to the real exam | Less exam-like |
| Best used | In the final weeks | Early in preparation |
How to Use Both
- Start with module-wise practice tests to build skills.
- Move to full mock tests in the final weeks of preparation.
- Always practise full mocks under timed conditions.
My Advice
Use practice tests to fix weak modules, then switch to full mocks once you are comfortable. Treat each mock as the real thing, with no breaks you would not get on exam day.
