What is the typical job placement rate for MBA graduates compared to MS graduates, especially for roles in management and finance?
There is no single national placement rate for either degree, but at IIM Ahmedabad every 2025-26 batch student was placed, with 41 percent of final offers in consulting and 21 percent in finance. MS placement outcomes vary widely by specialisation, so no comparable nationwide figure exists.
Quoting one placement percentage for either degree is misleading, because both figures depend entirely on which specific school, specialisation and country you are looking at. What can be compared fairly is how the two degrees are structured for recruiting, which is where the real gap between them shows up.
What India's Top MBA Placement Data Actually Shows
| Factor | MBA | MS |
|---|---|---|
| Typical target roles | Management, consulting, strategy, finance, operations | Specialised technical roles, varies heavily by MS type |
| Recruiting structure | Structured campus recruiting at top schools | More dependent on the individual programme and employer |
| Finance and management fit | Strong at established schools | Strong only for specific tracks like MS Finance or Financial Engineering |
Why MS Placement Rates Cannot Be Averaged the Same Way
IIM Bangalore reported that all 596 students who appeared for placements in 2026 received offers, totalling 664 offers from 177 firms, with 45 percent of offers in management consulting and 11 percent in investment banking. IIM Ahmedabad's audited 2025 placement data shows 41.3 percent consulting, 21.0 percent finance and 9.9 percent general management among final offers. An MS in Computer Science, an MS in Finance and an MS in Business Analytics have almost nothing in common in terms of employer pipeline, so blending them into one MS placement figure would misrepresent all three.

My Advice
Judge the individual programme, not the degree label. A strong, well recruited MS Finance or Financial Engineering programme can produce better finance outcomes than a weak MBA, while a top IIM MBA will out recruit almost any MS Management programme for general management roles. If management and finance specifically are your goal, ask any shortlisted programme for its own published placement report before comparing it to either of these India numbers.
