What is the student visa process for me if I join an MBA in Japan?

After you accept an offer, the admitting university generally applies for a Certificate of Eligibility on your behalf. Once Japan's Immigration Services Agency approves it, you apply for the student visa through the embassy, consulate or authorised centre and show the COE when you arrive.

After accepting your offer, you need a Student visa, and the process starts with a Certificate of Eligibility, which the admitting university generally applies for on your behalf. Once it is approved, you apply for the visa with your documents.

Funds, residence card and work

  • Financial evidence may include a bank-balance certificate, the sponsor's income certificate for the previous year and documents showing the source of funds.
  • Japan does not publish one standard financial amount for every student; the evidence needed depends on programme cost, study duration and sponsorship.
  • If you stay more than three months, you receive a residence card and must register your address at the local municipal office within 14 days.
  • Paid part-time work and internships need permission, and students can work up to 28 hours weekly, or eight hours daily during long university holidays.

My Advice

Gather your financial documents early because the evidence depends on how your studies are funded. Follow your university's instructions for the COE, since the university applies for it. Plan your post-study route ahead of time, because moving to a work status needs a change of residence status.
