What formula do I use to calculate my CGPA from my semester SGPA scores?

Quick Answer verified

To calculate CGPA from SGPA, add the SGPA of all semesters and divide by the total number of semesters. In the worked example, six semester SGPAs total 51.70, and dividing by 6 gives a CGPA of 8.62. Check how your university reports it.

You can calculate CGPA by adding the SGPA of every semester and dividing by the total number of semesters. The formula is CGPA = (SGPA of Sem 1 + Sem 2 + ... + Sem 6) / total semesters. A worked example is below.

Worked Example

SemesterSGPA
18.2
29.1
37.8
48.5
59.4
68.7
Total (6 semesters)51.70

The Calculation

  • CGPA = total of SGPA / total semesters, assuming every semester carries equal credits.
  • CGPA = 51.70 / 6 = 8.62 (rounded) in this example.

My Advice

Use your own semester results in the same formula. Universities may ask for grades in their own format, so check the official exam or university page for the latest rules before you submit.
