What does NMC require for me to practise in India after an MBBS in Poland?
Under NMC's current rules, Indian graduates generally need at least 54 months of study and a separate 12-month internship at the same foreign institution, in an English course. They also need Polish registration, the screening test, an Indian internship of at least 12 months and State Medical Council registration.
Completing the six-year course gives you a degree, but it does not automatically let you work as a doctor. Under NMC's current rules, you need to meet several course, registration, screening and internship conditions before practising in India.
NMC conditions for Indian graduates
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Course conditions | At least 54 months of study and a separate 12-month internship at the same foreign institution; the course must be in English and cover all required subjects |
| Registration in Poland | You must hold a licence equivalent to that issued to Polish doctors |
| Screening test | FMGE remained active as of June 2026; future graduates should check whether NExT has replaced it |
| Indian internship | At least 12 months of supervised internship or CRMI after provisional registration |
| Permanent registration | Apply to the relevant State Medical Council once all requirements are met |
If you also plan to practise in Poland
- Complete an internship; the standard postgraduate internship lasts 13 months, and shorter English-taught options need approval from the Polish Ministry of Health.
- Pass the LEK, Poland's final medical licensing examination.
- English-programme graduates usually need to pass the medical Polish-language exam.
- Apply to the relevant regional medical chamber for the right to practise.
My Advice
Confirm the 12-month internship and Polish registration requirements with both the university and NMC before you accept admission. These conditions are what decide whether your degree leads to Indian registration. Recheck the screening exam rules closer to your graduation, as they may change.
