What do the IELTS band scores from 0 to 9 mean for my English level?
IELTS bands run 0 to 9, with 9 meaning an expert user with complete command of English. Band 7 is a good user, band 6 a competent user and band 5 a modest user. Lower bands describe limited or extremely limited use, and 0 means the test was not attempted.
Each IELTS band describes how well you can use English, from a complete command at band 9 to no attempt at band 0. Reading the descriptors helps you understand what your score says about you.

How to Use the Bands
- Match your practice scores to the table to see where you stand.
- Check the minimum band your target program asks for, since requirements vary by university and course.
- Look at each section score as well, because programs may set separate minimums.
My Advice
Aim a little above your target band during practice so you have a buffer on test day. Always confirm the required scores on the official university page and the official IELTS website.
