What are the visa requirements and process for my family members accompanying me in New Zealand for a Master's/PhD?
Yes, your husband and son can accompany you to New Zealand while you study, but each will need a specific dependent visa.
- Husband: If you enroll in a Master's (Level 9) or PhD (Level 10) program, or certain Level 7/8 Green List courses, he may apply for a Partner of a Student Work Visa (full-time work rights). For other courses, he can apply for a Partner of a Student Visitor Visa (no work rights).
- Son: If under 19 and studying, he can apply for a Dependent Child Student Visa (often at domestic fee rates). If under 17 and not studying, a Guardian Visitor Visa is possible. For short visits (up to 3 months, no study), a Child Visitor Visa applies.
You’ll need to show proof of relationship, sufficient funds (typically NZD 20,000/year per dependent, subject to change), and accommodation arrangements. Medical exams and police clearances may be required.
Apply for your student visa first, then submit dependent visa applications online.
