Australia currently has a higher student visa refusal rate and higher visa application costs compared to New Zealand.
- Australia: Refusal rate is about 32.5% (as of early 2026). The student visa (Subclass 500) application fee is AUD 2,500 (from July 2026). This fee is non-refundable.
- New Zealand: Refusal rate is around 18% (2024/2025), mainly due to concerns about genuine study intent. The student visa application fee is NZD 850, also non-refundable.
