Should my statement of purpose for a law internship include specific sections, and how long should each be?
A law internship SOP typically has seven sections: introduction, academic background, legal skills and experience, motivation, career goals, why you are a good fit and a conclusion. Suggested lengths run from about 40 to 150 words each. Always follow the organization's own instructions.
There is no universal statement of purpose format for every law internship, so you should always follow the instructions of the law firm, advocate, organization, court, NGO or research institution. A clear, organized, easy-to-read structure helps.
Suggested SOP Format
| Section | What to include | Suggested length |
|---|---|---|
| Introduction | Name, law course or year and the internship you are applying for | 80 to 100 words |
| Academic background | Degree, university, relevant subjects and achievements | About 100 words |
| Legal skills and experience | Legal research, drafting, moot courts, projects and previous internships | 100 to 120 words |
| Motivation | Why you want the internship and what interests you about the organization | 120 to 150 words |
| Career goals | Short-term and long-term legal career plans | 80 to 100 words |
| Why you are a good fit | Relevant strengths, experience, knowledge and potential contribution | 80 to 100 words |

Before You Submit
- Check whether the organization has specified a word count, file type or formatting requirements.
- Look for particular questions that applicants must answer and address them directly.
- Treat the word counts above as suggestions rather than fixed rules.
My Advice
Write the motivation section first, since it carries the most weight, and then fit the other sections around it. Always let the organization's own instructions override any template.
