Should I pursue a master's research program or a PhD program abroad for a MRes?
If you want to build a career in academia or advanced research, a PhD is the right choice. For industry roles or specialist positions, a Master’s by Research (MRes) is often more practical.
- MRes: 1 - 2 years, focused on independent research and a thesis. Good for entering industry or preparing for further study.
- PhD: 3 - 5 years, involves original research and a dissertation. Best for academic or advanced research careers.
Both typically require at least a 2:1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent). Some PhD programs may also expect a master’s degree.
Choose a PhD if your goal is a long-term research or academic path. An MRes is ideal if you want research experience and flexibility for industry roles without the longer time commitment. If you need help matching your goals to the right program, connect with your LeapScholar counsellor.
