Is Duolingo accepted by most universities compared to IELTS for a Master's?
IELTS is more widely accepted than Duolingo by universities worldwide. As of July 2026:
- IELTS: Accepted by over 12,000 institutions globally.
- Duolingo: Accepted by over 2,200 U.S. universities, including some top schools, but not as universally as IELTS.
In the U.S., many universities accept Duolingo for admissions, but some still require IELTS or TOEFL, especially for student visa applications where IELTS is often preferred.
For your planned Master's in the U.S. (January 2027), check each university's English test requirements.
