How will my GRE General Test score be calculated section by section?
GRE Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are typically scored from 130 to 170 in 1-point increments, and Analytical Writing from 0 to 6 in half-point increments. Only the Verbal and Quantitative scores form the final combined GRE score. Check the official ETS page for the latest format.
The GRE General Test assesses quantitative, verbal reasoning and analytical writing skills. Each section has its own score range, and universities accept scores for postgraduate courses.
Score Range by Section
| GRE section | Score range |
|---|---|
| Verbal Reasoning | 130 to 170, in 1-point increments |
| Quantitative Reasoning | 130 to 170, in 1-point increments |
| Analytical Writing | 0 to 6, in half-point increments |
How the Final Score Works
- Only the Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning sections are included in the final GRE score.
- Analytical Writing is reported separately.
- Confirm the latest scoring and format on the official exam page.
My Advice
Build a realistic study plan that covers all three sections, but give Verbal and Quant the most attention since they make up the final score. Check each university's score expectations too.
