How should I structure my essay in the IELTS Writing section?
A solid IELTS essay usually follows an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, with a third body paragraph optional. You paraphrase the question and state your position first, develop one main idea per paragraph, then summarize and restate your view at the end.
A clear structure helps the examiner follow your argument from the first line to the last. You should plan an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion before you begin writing.
Essay Structure at a Glance
| Part | What you do |
|---|---|
| Introduction | Paraphrase the question, then state your position or outline what you will discuss |
| Body paragraph 1 | Present your first main idea with examples |
| Body paragraph 2 | Discuss your second main idea with supporting details |
| Body paragraph 3 (optional) | Add a counterargument or another relevant point if it helps |
| Conclusion | Summarize your main points, then restate your position or close with a final thought |
How to Use This Structure
- Give each body paragraph one main idea so the reader never has to guess your point.
- Support every idea with an example or detail instead of making a bare claim.
- Use the optional third paragraph only when it genuinely strengthens your answer.
