How should I split my time across the IELTS Reading sections on test day?
IELTS Reading typically gives 60 minutes for three sections of rising difficulty. Spend no more than about 20 minutes on each, finish the first section quickly, start with easier question types, and keep 2 to 3 minutes to review. Check the official IELTS page for the latest format.
Time management is essential in IELTS Reading, because you must attempt all questions within the time allowed, typically one hour. The three sections get harder as you go.
Reading Time Plan
| Point | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Total time | Typically 60 minutes for the whole Reading section |
| Number of sections | Three, each increasing in difficulty |
| Time per section | No more than about 20 minutes |
| Review | Leave at least 2 to 3 minutes to check your answers |
Time-Saving Strategies
- Start with easier questions such as matching headings or true/false/not given to save time for challenging ones.
- Do not stay stuck on one question; move on and attempt the hard ones last.
- Finish the first section quickly so you have more time for the next two.
- Go through each question's instructions carefully so you do not lose minutes on avoidable mistakes.
My Advice
Practise with a timer set to these limits. After each mock, note which question type cost you the most time and make that your focus the following week.
