What actually convinces them is evidence, a specific project, course or moment where the computational side of your electronics work pulled you in, paired with proof you have already started building the skills the new field needs.

How to Structure the SOP Itself

• Open with relevant Electronics coursework: programming, embedded systems, signal processing, mathematics or control systems.
• Name the specific turning point, a project or module where the computational or data-analysis side of the problem is what actually held your interest.
• Show hard evidence of the transition: Python, SQL or machine-learning coursework, an internship, a certification, or a personal project.
• Connect explicitly to the target programme's own curriculum, not a generic line about New Zealand having excellent education.

My Advice

Do not reuse the same SOP paragraph across every university; tailor the "why this programme" section to each one's actual curriculum, since a generic version is easy for an admissions reader to spot. If you genuinely have little programming exposure yet, spend the months before applying building a small personal data project, since conversion programmes still want to see initiative, not just a well-written story about wanting to switch fields.
