How many GRE mock tests should I take per day or week during preparation?
Never take more than one GRE mock test per day. For most of your prep take one every one to two weeks, then one or two weekly in the final fortnight. Aim for five to eight mocks across two to three months of preparation.
The most common GRE mistake is taking mocks too often. Real score gains happen during the deep review and targeted practice between tests, not from the test taking itself, so never exceed one mock per day. Across a two to three month prep window, five to eight full length mocks is the sweet spot for most test takers.
Phase By Phase Mock Test Schedule
| Phase | Frequency And Purpose |
|---|---|
| Week 1, diagnostic | Exactly 1 mock to baseline your strengths and weaknesses |
| Mid preparation | 1 mock every 7 to 14 days to track progress and practise pacing |
| Final 2 weeks | 1 to 2 mocks per week as strict dress rehearsals for stamina |
| Last 3 days | Stop all full length mocks to avoid burnout |
The 3x Review Rule
| Error Type | What To Log |
|---|---|
| Careless errors | Misread questions or simple calculation slips |
| Content gaps | A forgotten formula or an unknown vocabulary word |
| Pacing issues | Any question that took more than 2.5 minutes |
My Advice
Spend roughly three times as long reviewing a mock as you spent taking it, and keep a running error log so patterns become obvious. Between mocks, do not burn through limited official ETS tests, instead drill targeted problem sets from a resource like the Manhattan 5 lb book to fix your specific weak spots. Treat mocks as measurement tools, and let the learning happen in the review.
