How is my GRE General Test score calculated, and what is the total score range?
GRE Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning are each scored on a 130 to 170 scale. Added together they give a total between 260 and 340. Analytical Writing is scored 0 to 6 in half-point steps and does not count toward the total. Check the official ETS page for current scoring.
The GRE General Test total comes from your Verbal and Quantitative scores, while Analytical Writing is reported separately. There is typically no negative marking for incorrect answers.
GRE Section Score Scales
| Section | Score scale |
|---|---|
| Verbal Reasoning | 130 to 170 |
| Quantitative Reasoning | 130 to 170 |
| Analytical Writing | 0 to 6, in half-point increments (for example 3.0, 3.5, 4.0) |
Total Score and What Counts as Good
Your Verbal and Quant scores are added together for a total between 260 and 340. The Analytical Writing score does not count toward the 340 total.
Some sources treat a score of 320 or above as good, but this depends on the programs you apply to. A score between 300 and 310 may be enough for some courses, while others may expect 330 or higher.
ETS typically releases the scorecard in around 10 to 15 days from the test date. Scoring and reporting details can change, so check the official ETS website for the latest.
My Advice
Look up the score ranges that your target programs actually admit rather than chasing a single number. Set a Verbal and Quant target for each programme, and keep your Analytical Writing preparation steady as well.
