How do I divide my 60 minutes between IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2?
Plan around 40 minutes for IELTS Writing Task 2 and no more than about 20 minutes for Task 1, because the essay carries roughly two thirds of the writing score. The whole section runs 60 minutes, so check the official IELTS page for current rules.
You should treat the 60 minute writing section as two unequal parts. Task 2, the essay, usually carries about two thirds of the writing score, so it deserves around 40 minutes, while Task 1 should stay within about 20 minutes.
Suggested Time Split for the Writing Section
| Task | Suggested time | Why |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Writing Task 1 | Not more than about 20 minutes | Shorter task, smaller share of the score |
| IELTS Writing Task 2 (essay) | Around 40 minutes | Carries about 2/3 of the writing score |
| Whole writing section | 60 minutes | Both tasks share this single block |
Habits That Protect Your Time
- Write more than 150 words for Task 1 and more than 250 words for Task 2, since falling short is penalised.
- Count lines instead of words to estimate length quickly.
- Make notes on the question paper, as extra paper is not usually provided.
- Keep the last few minutes for the Task 2 conclusion.
My Advice
Practise with a timer so that 20 minutes on Task 1 feels natural. If Task 1 starts running long, stop, write a clear overview, and move on to the essay. Always confirm the latest timing and format on the official IELTS page.
