How do I convert my CGPA into total marks and marks obtained for my degree?
First convert your CGPA to a percentage, usually CGPA times 9.5, then apply that percentage to your degree's total maximum marks. For example, an 8.0 CGPA becomes 76%, and against 4,000 total marks that is 3,040 marks obtained. Always check your marksheet's own formula first.
Converting CGPA into actual marks is a two-step job: turn your CGPA into a percentage, then apply that percentage to the total marks your degree carries. Because grading rules differ, the formula printed on the back of your marksheet always wins over any generic method.
The Standard 9.5 Method Worked Out
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Find total marks | 40 papers x 100 marks | 4,000 |
| Convert to percentage | 8.0 CGPA x 9.5 | 76% |
| Marks obtained | (76 / 100) x 4,000 | 3,040 |
Quick Reference on a 1,000-Mark Total
| CGPA | Percentage (9.5 rule) | Marks Obtained |
|---|---|---|
| 9.5 | 90.25% | 902.5 |
| 9.0 | 85.5% | 855 |
| 8.5 | 80.75% | 807.5 |
| 8.0 | 76.0% | 760 |
| 7.5 | 71.25% | 712.5 |
| 7.0 | 66.5% | 665 |
My Advice
Confirm which multiplier your university uses before you calculate, since Anna University and Mumbai University use CGPA times 10 rather than 9.5, which changes your marks meaningfully. When an application asks for marks obtained, back it up with your official marksheet or a registrar conversion certificate so the numbers you report can be verified.
