How do I calculate my percentage of marks for one exam, multiple subjects and each subject?
Percentage equals marks obtained divided by total maximum marks, multiplied by 100. For several subjects, add all marks obtained and divide by the total of all maximum marks. For one subject, use that subject's marks and its own maximum marks.
To get your percentage, divide the marks you obtained by the total maximum marks and multiply by 100. The same idea works for one exam or many, as long as you add up the totals first. For example, 25 out of 50 gives 50 percent.
Percentage Formulas by Scenario
| Scenario | Formula |
|---|---|
| Basic | Percentage = (Marks Obtained / Total Marks) x 100 |
| Multiple subjects, same or different maximum marks | Percentage = (Total Marks Obtained in all Subjects / Total Marks of all Subjects) x 100 |
| Subject-wise | Percentage in each subject = (Marks in that subject / Maximum marks for that subject) x 100 |
How to Apply the Formula
- Add the marks you received across the subjects to get your total obtained marks.
- Add the maximum marks of those subjects to get the total maximum marks.
- Divide the first total by the second and multiply by 100.
- Use the subject-wise version when you need the percentage for one subject on its own.
My Advice
Work out each subject percentage first and the overall percentage second, then keep both handy. Some universities may ask how your marks are converted, so confirm their conversion rules on the official university page.
