How do I calculate my GPA and CGPA for applying to universities abroad?

GPA is your total grade points divided by total credit hours, with each course's grade point multiplied by its credits. Cumulative GPA is usually credit-weighted across all semesters, not a simple average of semester GPAs. Some universities use weighted credits or their own formulas.

GPA reflects a single semester or term, while CGPA reflects your cumulative performance over the whole programme. For GPA, you multiply each course's grade point by its credits, add them up and divide by total credits. Some universities use weighted credit systems or their own formulas.

GPA Worked Example

SubjectCreditsGradeGrade pointCredits x grade point
Mathematics4A4.016
Programming3B+3.39.9
Statistics3A-3.711.1
Economics2B3.06
Total1243

From GPA to CGPA

In this example, 43 grade points divided by 12 credits gives a semester GPA of 3.58.

Cumulative GPA is usually credit-weighted, not a simple average of semester GPAs. If every semester carries equal credits, though, averaging works: with six semesters of 8.2, 8.5, 8.1, 8.7, 8.6 and 8.4, the total is 50.5, and dividing by 6 gives a CGPA of 8.42. Many universities use total credits and cumulative grade points, so check your institution's official grading policy.

My Advice

Use the figures on your official transcript and follow the calculation method your target university states. If it does not state one, ask the admissions office before you submit a converted score.
