How can I get my physical documents attested for an MEA apostille in India if e-Sanad does not cover them?
Physical documents not covered by e-Sanad go through three steps: authentication by the relevant Regional Authentication Centre or state department, deposit with an authorised service provider near you, and collection of the apostilled documents from the same provider. Check the official MEA page for the latest procedure.
For physical documents outside e-Sanad, the process is more manual but well organised. Your documents are first authenticated by the right state-level authority, then submitted through an authorised service provider for the MEA. Procedures can change, so check the official MEA page.
Three Steps for Physical Documents
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1: Authentication | Get documents authenticated by the Regional Authentication Centres |
| 2: Deposit | Visit the outsourced agency centre near your residence and deposit the verified documents |
| 3: Receipt | Collect the apostilled or attested documents from the agency after the Branch Secretariat or RPO has legalised them |
Who Authenticates Which Document
| Document type | Authenticating body |
|---|---|
| Personal | Home or General Administration Department of the State or Union Territory |
| Educational | Education department of the concerned state or union territory |
| Commercial | Chamber of Commerce registered with the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to issue a Certificate of Origin |
My Advice
Sort your documents by type first so you approach the right authority for each. Keep copies of everything you submit. Fees and timelines vary, so check the official MEA and service provider pages before you start.
