MEM makes more sense if your path looks like mechanical engineer, senior engineer, then project, program or engineering management. MEng or MS in Mechanical Engineering makes more sense if your path looks like mechanical engineer, senior engineer, then technical specialist or principal engineer. If you already lead people, budgets or cross-functional projects, an MEM builds directly on that. BLS also projects mechanical engineering employment growing about 11 percent from 2025 to 2035, compared with about 6 percent for architectural and engineering management roles over the same period.

My Advice

List what you have actually done at work for the last several years before choosing, since neither degree title alone guarantees a management promotion without that experience already showing on your resume. If your experience is still mostly technical, an MEng keeps your options broader than jumping straight into an MEM.
