Given my commerce background, should I pursue an MBA in Finance to focus on banking, investment, or corporate finance roles, or would a general MBA be better for exploring leadership or management roles across various industries?
The mistake to avoid is picking Finance simply because you already have a commerce degree. Your undergraduate background does not lock you into one specialisation, and at several top Indian schools the general MBA still lets you load up on finance electives, so the real question is how specific your career target already is.

How to test which one actually fits you
- Say this out loud: "I want my daily work to involve financial markets, valuation or corporate financial decisions." If that is true, Finance is the more directly aligned route.
- Say this instead: "I want management responsibility, but I have not picked a function yet." If that is closer to you, a general MBA with finance electives keeps more doors open.

My Advice
If you are genuinely undecided, lean toward a strong general MBA where you can still take a heavy load of finance electives rather than committing early to a narrow specialisation label; the B-school's overall placement strength usually matters more to recruiters than whether your degree says Finance or General Management.
