The specialisation title matters less than the practical portfolio it produces. If your goal is genuinely building an audience through video, social platforms and written content rather than becoming a traditional print or broadcast reporter, prioritise a curriculum built around digital-first skills over one built around conventional journalism.

Why New Media Communications fits a content-creation goal

  • IIMC, New Media Communications: explicitly covers digital storytelling, platform strategy, media analytics, AI-driven media, creator economy and social media management, run by India's Institute of Mass Communication.
  • UPES, Journalism and Digital Media MA: combines digital journalism with audiovisual production, podcasting, mobile journalism, creator economy content and an internship or capstone project.
  • IGNOU, MA Journalism and Digital Media: a more flexible, distance-learning route emphasising digital media, online journalism and digital production skills.

What your portfolio should look like by graduation

Regardless of which specialisation you pick, aim to graduate with short-form video and Reels content, SEO-friendly web writing, at least one podcast or audio project, a social media campaign, basic audience analytics work and hands-on CMS or web publishing experience, since employers in digital media hire on portfolio strength as much as on the degree title.

My Advice

If online content creation to you means YouTube, Instagram or the creator economy rather than becoming a traditional journalist, lean specifically toward Advertising and Digital Communication electives alongside New Media Communications, since that combination builds brand content and campaign skills that pure journalism programmes do not emphasise as strongly.
