Could you tell me what an IELTS cue card is before my speaking test?
An IELTS cue card, also called a task card, asks you to talk about one topic in the Speaking test. It has a main topic and a few bullet points, sometimes a follow-up question. You usually get paper and pencil for notes, then speak for around 1 to 2 minutes.

What a Cue Card Looks Like
| Part | Detail |
|---|---|
| Other name | Task card |
| Main topic | One topic you are asked to talk about |
| Bullet points | A few points that help you decide what to say |
| Follow-up | Sometimes one small follow-up question |
| Preparation | Paper and pencil to make notes in the one minute before you start |
| Speaking time | Around 1 to 2 minutes without stopping |
How to Use It
- Use the preparation minute to jot down quick notes
- Cover each bullet point as you speak
- Keep going for the full time instead of stopping early
My Advice
Practise with a timer: one minute of notes, then speak without stopping. Check the official IELTS site for the latest Speaking test rules, since timings can be updated.
