The IELTS exam assesses your English skills in Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. For university admission, you need the Academic version.

- Listening: 4 recordings, 40 questions, about 30 minutes
- Reading: 3 passages, 40 questions, 60 minutes
- Writing: 2 tasks (describe a graph/chart and write an essay), 60 minutes
- Speaking: Face-to-face interview, 11 - 14 minutes

Each section is scored 0 - 9, with an overall band score averaged. Most universities require 6.0 - 7.0 overall, with some top programs needing 7.0+ and no band below 6.5.

Difficulty depends on your background, but Listening (accents), Writing, and Speaking (fluency/grammar) can be challenging. With focused preparation, the test is manageable.
