STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses in the US offer longer post-study work opportunities than non-STEM courses.

- STEM graduates can get up to 36 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT): 12 months standard plus a 24-month STEM extension.
- Non-STEM graduates are limited to 12 months of OPT with no extension.

The extra time for STEM graduates makes it easier to gain US work experience and seek long-term employment. Whether a program qualifies as STEM depends on its official classification, which is subject to change.
