Are the Faculty Development Programme (FDP) and the Statement of Purpose (SOP) for the same applicants or do they serve different purposes?

The confusion here comes entirely from the acronyms landing on the same page during research, not from any real overlap in purpose. Once you separate who each document is for, the distinction becomes straightforward.

Faculty Development Programme: Who It Is Actually For

A Faculty Development Programme is professional training aimed at improving teaching, research, and pedagogy skills among existing academics. In India, AICTE runs FDPs specifically for teachers at approved technical institutions, and institutions such as IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Kashipur run their own FDPs aimed at management educators. None of these are aimed at prospective master's students.

Statement of Purpose: Who It Is Actually For

• Who writes it: students applying to a bachelor's, master's, or PhD programme, not faculty or working professionals applying for training.
• What it covers: academic background, career goals, why that specific programme, and how your experience fits the course.
• When it is required: almost universally for graduate applications abroad, regardless of country or field.

The One Overlap Worth Knowing

A single person can encounter both documents at different career stages: as a student applying abroad, you will write an SOP, and years later, as a working faculty member, you might apply to an FDP for professional development. They are simply not two documents for the same application.

If you saw FDP mentioned on a university or scholarship page while researching your own master's application, double check the context, since it may simply refer to that institution's faculty training arm and have nothing to do with your student application. Your SOP is the document that actually needs your attention.
