About this course
This honours degree in Biomedical Science is a joint offering by MTU and UCC, designed to prepare students to work as medical scientists in various healthcare and research settings. The course explores diverse areas such as biochemistry, microbiology, cellular pathology, haematology, and transfusion science, with a focus on studying disease mechanisms and advancing medical research through state-of-the-art technologies. While work placement is not part of the four-year program, graduates can pursue the optional Diploma in Clinical Laboratory Practice, which, when combined with the degree, is approved by CORU for practicing as a medical scientist in Ireland.
Why this course is highly recommended
This course offers a strong foundation in biomedical sciences with training in cutting-edge technologies, making it ideal for students interested in pursuing careers in laboratory medicine, healthcare, or research. The joint partnership between MTU and UCC also enhances learning and career opportunities, especially since the combination of the degree and diploma is required to practice as a medical scientist in Ireland.
Specialisation
The programme covers crucial disciplines including clinical biochemistry, haematology, histology/histopathology, diagnostic microbiology, and transfusion science, providing a well-rounded foundation in biomedical sciences related to disease diagnosis and management.
