About the Scholarship

  • Dr. Ravi Sankaran (October 4, 1963 – January 17, 2009) was an ornithologist who devoted his life to biodiversity conservation in India as a researcher, teacher, mentor, and, eventually, Director of the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History.

  • Ravi received acclaim for his pioneering studies on the endangered Lesser Florican in western India while a graduate student at the Bombay Natural History Society in the 1980s. His studies laid the groundwork for the conservation of this endangered species, as well as other species and environments that he researched afterwards. He was a great source of inspiration for colleagues and students, as well as a well-known figure in India's field of animal conservation.

  • In recent years, he has concentrated his studies on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a system home to many endangered species such as the Nicobar Megapode and the Indian Edible-nest Swiftlet. Ravi's study on the Swiftlet gave critical insights for the species' conservation, and he was heavily involved in the development of community-based conservation strategies, such as nest ranching and sustainable harvesting. This method is diametrically opposed to the traditional preservationist attitude in India, and it exemplifies Ravi's unique and well-balanced conservation viewpoint.
