Germany Study Visa 2026: Fees, Documents & Process for Indian Students

The Germany study visa is the National Visa (Visum zu Studienzwecken, Type D): the long-stay permit every Indian student needs before a full-time Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, or Studienkolleg program longer than 90 days. As a third-country national, you must get this visa stamped before departure. You cannot enter on a tourist Schengen visa and switch to a student permit later.

Most Master's applicants use the National Visa. If your offer letter is still pending, the Student Applicant Visa lets you travel for admission formalities without losing your intake.

Since late 2022, the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) verifies your Indian degree before you can book a visa appointment or, in most cases, apply to a German university.

• Cost: Rs.18,000, non-refundable.
• Processing time: 3 to 4 weeks normally, 8 to 10 weeks in the May-August peak season.
• Validity: Lifetime, valid for every German university you apply to.
• 2026 update: As of March 2026, APS India requires at least 70% overall in Class 12 to clear the Anabin database check, effective from Winter Semester 2026-27. Final-year students should submit a provisional certificate and start APS in February rather than waiting for their final degree.

If your Bachelor's is in engineering, computer science, commerce, finance, economics, business, or management, and you're targeting Summer Semester 2027 or later, you'll also need a dMAT (Digital Master Test) score in your APS file. The blocked account (Sperrkonto) proves you can support yourself for your first year. Deposit €11,904 with an approved provider before your visa appointment, then draw €992 a month once you activate it in Germany.

Counselor insight: Transfer slightly more than €11,904, around €12,000-12,100. Bank charges on international transfers can shave off €50-150, and a deposit even a euro short delays your blocking confirmation.

1. Secure your admission letter from a recognized German university.
2. Apply for your APS certificate 5 to 6 months before your intake.
3. Open your blocked account and deposit €11,904.
4. Arrange health insurance and public statutory cover if you're under 30.
5. Register on the Consular Services Portal (CSP) and upload documents for pre-screening.
6. Book your VFS Global appointment: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, or Kochi.
7. Attend biometrics and your interview with originals and organized copies.
8. Pay the visa fee and wait for processing, typically 4 to 12 weeks. Apply at least 3 months before your course start date.

Interview questions are direct: they ask why you chose this university and course, how the degree fits your career plan, and how you will fund yourself beyond the blocked account. Panels are checking whether you understand your application, not testing memorized answers.

• Public (statutory) insurance: Students under 30 in a degree program. Rs.13,625-17,440 a month (TK, AOK, Barmer).
• Private insurance: Students over 30, language course, or Studienkolleg. Rs.3,815-8,720 a month. Choosing private under 30 means a permanent exemption from the public system.
• Travel insurance: A temporary policy covering at least €30,000 for the gap before your semester insurance starts.

Non-EU students can now work 140 full days a year (up from 120), or 280 half-days, as confirmed on the official Make it in Germany portal. That's roughly 20 hours a week in a semester, with more flexibility during breaks. HiWi roles and mandatory internships don't count against this limit. Minimum wage is €13.90 an hour (Rs.1,515).

Approval rates for Indian applicants generally run 82% to 90%, with most rejections tracing back to a handful of avoidable causes:

• Insufficient or unclear funds: Below €11,904, or a sudden deposit with no traceable source.
• Missing or delayed APS certificate: No appointment without it, and the stricter 70% Class 12 rule has caught out some 2026 applicants.
• Generic SOP: Reads like it could fit any university, anywhere.
• Academic gaps: Unexplained breaks between your last qualification and application.
• Incomplete documentation: Missing insurance proof or documents out of VFS order.

If you're rejected: get the reason in writing, fix that specific gap rather than reapplying unchanged, and disclose the earlier rejection honestly next time. Most Indian applicants who resolve the actual issue succeed on their second attempt. If your intake is at risk, contact your university's international office about a one-semester deferral.
