TOEFL, or Test of English as a Foreign Language, is a popular English proficiency test widely accepted in the UK. More than 12,000 universities and institutions in over 160 countries accept this test as proof of the academic English abilities of test-takers. TOEFL is a 2-hour test that evaluates candidates on four parameters: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing.

TOEFL is split into three types, based on the mode of exam:

  • TOEFL iBT (Internet-based)
  • TOEFL Essentials

Out of the two, TOEFL iBT is the most popular and is accepted by 100% of UK universities, including the Russell Group universities such as Oxford and Cambridge. TOEFL iBT is a 3-hour test that is the perfect English proficiency test for those looking to move to the UK for studies.

TOEFL Essentials, on the other hand, is an adaptive test of 1.5 hours. While TOEFL Essentials does evaluate the same modules as TOEFL iBT, it is accepted by fewer universities.

The average minimum TOEFL score required to get into a university in the UK is between 92-100.
