Before gathering documents, confirm you meet the eligibility bar. A note for Indian applicants: CBSE results are generally treated equally to those from other boards, but state board results may require a percentage-to-GPA conversion, and some universities ask for a WES evaluation for older degrees.

My insight: The most common mistake is applying to CS or Engineering with a percentage that clears the website minimum but sits well below what actually gets shortlisted. Check the admitted-student average on the program page, not just the stated minimum.

• If you are asking about September 2026, major university admissions have largely wound down. Rolling-admissions colleges like Conestoga, Centennial, and Humber may still have seats. A direct call to admissions will tell you more than any website.
  
• If you are targeting September 2027 but have not yet taken IELTS or PTE, there is still a workable window. Most final deadlines fall between December 2026 and February 2027, leaving three to five months.

One thing many students underestimate: The last date to apply for September intake in Canada is not the same as the last safe date to act. By the time you receive an offer letter and file your study permit, you will have waited another three to four months. Students who apply at the deadline often find themselves in a visa queue during the summer peak, when processing is slowest.

Important note for the students: The Student Direct Stream closed in November 2024. Every Indian student now goes through the regular study permit stream, which runs four to twelve weeks and longer in peak months. For September 2027 entry, your study permit file should go in by April 2027, which means your offer letter should be in hand by March, which means your application should be in well before Christmas 2026.

My insight: PAL confusion is one of the most common problems I notice among the students. A master's and PhD at a public university means no PAL. Undergraduate or college diploma means you still need one. The program level decides it, not the university name. Bank statements must now cover 6 months and include source-of-income documentation following IRCC's July 2026 update. A sudden large deposit with no clear explanation is one of the most common reasons a financial file is questioned.

Proof of funds (living expenses only, one year) is the main financial requirement for a September intake. Tuition and return travel must be shown separately. IRCC also requires documentation of the source of funds and, for programs longer than one year, a plan for funding later years. Most students share accommodation, which brings monthly costs down considerably.

Call the admissions office. Colleges like Conestoga, Centennial, and Humber use rolling admissions, where seats stay open until they fill, not until a calendar date.

Low IELTS score?

Ask whether a conditional offer with an English bridging course is available. It is more common than students realise, especially at colleges.

Results delayed?

Submit your deferral request in writing. Most Canadian institutions will hold an offer for one intake cycle without requiring a fresh application.

Study permit refused?

Read the refusal letter in full. The most common reasons for Indian applicants in 2025-26 were insufficient financial proof and weak return-intent documentation in the SOP. Both can be fixed on reapplication. There is no formal appeal process, but a fresh file that directly addresses the officer's stated reason is very different from resubmitting the same documents. If your province's PAL allocation runs out, options include switching to a province with remaining allocation, targeting a master's program which is exempt, or applying for January intake in Canada.

2. Confirm your PAL status before arranging financial documents. Master's and PhDs at a public university are exempt. Undergraduate and diploma applicants are not exempt, and provincial caps may be reached.
3. Budget Rs.15,90,009 (CAD 23,448) for living expenses alone as a single applicant, on top of tuition and travel. The figure rose in September 2026 and is adjusted annually.
