Most Indian students applying for degree programmes will need a Type D national student visa for Spain. Short courses of less than 90 days require a Type C visa instead.
My Insight: I notice this scenario every year. A student brings a Type C form to the counter when they need Type D, or the other way around. The documents differ, and you will have to restart your appointment from scratch.

My Insight: The apostille requirement for the PCC and medical certificate can surprise students. Allow two to four weeks: obtain the PCC from your Regional Passport Office first, then send both for apostille through the Ministry of External Affairs.

How to Apply for Spain Study Visa: Step by Step for Indian Students
Step 1: Get your admission letter.
First, secure confirmation from a recognised Spanish university. You cannot apply without it.
Step 2: Start your PCC and medical certificate immediately.
Apply for your PCC from your Regional Passport Office, then send both the PCC and the medical certificate for apostille through the Ministry of External Affairs. Allow two to four weeks.
Step 3: Download and complete the Spain study visa application form.
The form is available on the BLS Spain India website or directly from the Spanish Embassy New Delhi page. Fill in every section and sign it.
Step 4: Book your Spain study visa appointment.
Book online through the BLS Spain India portal. Centres in New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai open slots online. These fill several weeks before the deadline, so book as soon as your documents are ready. Apply at least two months before your course starts.
Step 5: Attend your appointment, submit and track

My Insight: The health insurance condition is where most genuine applicants trip up. Travel insurance is not enough. You need private health insurance that is specifically authorised to operate in Spain and has no deductibles. Most standard travel policies do not meet this requirement.
TIE Card: What to Do After You Land in Spain
After arriving on a Type D visa, you have 30 days to apply for the TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero), which gives you the right to stay and study for the duration of your programme.
- Apply at the nearest Foreign Nationals Office or Police Station
- Bring your passport, visa, completed Form EX-17 and one colour photograph
