By following defined protocols for providing examinations in a professional and standardised manner, the Placement and Testing office improves student learning experiences. The university works hard to ensure that students are placed in courses that are appropriate for their skill level, laying the groundwork for future success. They assist students, Kent State University instructors, and test sponsors domestically and internationally by administering examinations in a timely, fair, and accurate manner. The National College Testing Association's Professional Standards and Guidelines have been adopted by the centre.
Mathematics Placement
Most incoming New Freshman and transfer students who have not completed a college-level mathematics course at another college or university, earned scores of 3 or higher on the Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus AB or Calculus BC test, or earned course equivalent college credit through an alternative credit-granting programme such as CLEP, will be required to take mathematics placement.
Foreign Language Placement
Even if they have never studied a foreign language before, newly admitted students majoring in programmes with a foreign language requirement or who plan to study a foreign language should complete the foreign language placement questionnaire prior to their initial advising visit. Returning students who have not completed a language placement test but want to learn a foreign language should fill out the placement questionnaire as well.
English Placement
Undergraduates are assigned to an initial English course depending on their standardised test scores (ACT/SAT, Accuplacer). If a student believes their course placement is incorrect, they can contest it.
